im not dead! ive had this finished for near two weeks now, im really not sure why i didnt submit it earlier. i meant to, but im not sure what happened!

i sat down at my computer one afternoon and finally finished this sketch: [link] . surprisingly enough, it only took me something like 8 hours, which is amazing for me. im a slow colorer and often spread things over a few days. on this particular day, i remember being a bit in a funk here at the house, and this really did the trick to get me out of it (and kill the afternoon, making way for a funfilled evening!).

i really am not quite sure how i went about and did this. it was much more painterly than ive ever done before, and sweet mother of pearl, i actually like it! i moved a few things, like the main mountain peak on the right side, i moved it up from the sketch. nixed a bunch of other mountains for subtle suggestions of them far away. i also added lots of things, like edge of the rock face thats in the bottom of the image. at first i didnt want to have that in there, but truth be told, i couldnt get it to look right any other way.

in terms of color palette, essentially, i started from the top and worked down. thus, i started with the sky. i spent quite a lot of time working to get that looking and feeling the way i wanted it to. from there, i had the option of just sampling colors from the sky and clouds and using them for everything else - with the obvious adjustment of darkening them. it definately had the unifying effect i wanted it to, and i made several mental notes at how helpful it was to really build out the color palette in the begining.

i worked really hard, so thanks for taking the time to look!

Some of the brushstrokes are still distrating from the characters like those on the mountain (background) and the big ones in the sky, but i love the colors. The way to drew the hair to indicate wind and the colors really set a mood here, you can almost fell the temperature and the wind. :)
